Growers have used stored hybrid canola seed to make up the shortfall in orders, whether as a standalone crop or by “shandying” the stored seed with the limited amount of new certified seed they could get their hands on.
Mark Modra, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, said sowing stored hybrid seed was the only option for certain paddocks this year.
CBH chief executive officer Jimmy Wilson announced the $4 a tonne price drop last Thursday, as part of the bulk handler’s attempts to remove $100 million in paddock to port costs over the next 18 months.
Mr Wilson said the cuts would be split evenly between grower and marketer fees.

WESTERN Australia’s shrinking share of the Middle East grain trade could be further hit by “backlash” retaliation for any suspension or banning of live sheep exports destined for markets there, a Pingelly farmer has warned.
Irrespective of whether it is a temporary shutdown for the northern hemisphere summer or a permanent ban, any interruption to live sheep exports from WA to the Middle East could have the same “flow-on” impact on WA’s grain trade, Ray Marshall warned this week.
“To me it (shutting down live exports to the Middle East) is an unacceptable risk to WA’s agriculture generally,” Mr Marshall said.
