WAGG, which represents more than 100 farmers with a range of operations, has been actively defending the live sheep trade, saying the ramifications of a ban on the trade would be devastating to WA producers – whether they run sheep or not.

The group wants WA politicians to have more input in the media debate about live exports and to back the agricultural industry rather than “sitting on the fence”.

Key representatives from the State’s grain industry say they are confident WA’s quarantine measures are adequate, after touring a number of biosecurity operations throughout Perth.

For the first time last month the GrainGuard committee was given an insight into WA’s frontline quarantine system, after visiting the Canning Vale wholesale produce markets and attending meetings with staff from Quarantine WA and the Federal Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR).  Continue Reading…

A WA grower group is raising questions about the status of end point royalties (EPRs) in the Australian grain seed industry.

Ray Marshall, WA Grains Group, said while his organisation supported the concept of EPRs for plant breeders over alternative systems such as patent rights, there needed to be more scrutiny over how EPR prices were set and what varieties plant breeders released.
